In fact, it is the old way of doing things, and has been lost to time in many ways, as modern producers lean towards single-varietal wines. Not so with Jean-Michel Deiss, who, in 1981, took over one of Alsace's great vineyard sites, the Schoenenbourg. Eentrusted to him by an old man on his deathbed, Deiss found that it was co-planted to a field blend, instead of any single variety, and chose to continue to farm and produce wine from the site in this manner. And since that date, he has become one of the unquestionable qualitative leaders of the region, as well as a leading voice for biodynamic farming, which he installed at the domaine in 1988. With his son Mathieu taking over much of the day to day responsibility in 2015, the domaine is reaching dizzying new heights with absolutely stunning wines that show off the terroir of the rolling hills of Bergheim

'Engelgarten' or "The Garden of the Angels," is one of the best known terroirs in all of Bergheim, and the field blend Deiss produces from the sight consist of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Beurot, Muscat, and even a bit of Pinot Noir.
