Vin d'Alsace 'La Colline du Château' Pinot Noir

At the foot of the majestic Schlossberg hill, surrounded by vines and roses, lies Domaine Weinbach. Named after the little stream which runs through the property and planted with vines since the 9th century, it was established as a winery in 1612 by Capuchin friars. After being sold as national property during the French Revolution, it was acquired by the Faller brothers, Théodore and Jean-Baptiste in 1898 who then left it to their son and nephew, Théo, who was a prominent figure in Alsace wine-growing and an ardent defender of quality wine production. Since his death, his heirs—beginning with his wife Colette, but followed by daughters Catherine and Laurence and now his grandchildren Eddy and Théo—have continued the family’s passion for the great wines of Alsace with an unrelenting commitment to delivering excellence.

Domaine Weinbach produces their wine strictly through biodynamics and organics, with indigenous yeasts. This is a very traditional method of production, but one that Weinbach has honed to perfection. In my opinion, their wines conveys a spirit and liveliness rarely found in the modern world.

Their 'La Colline du Château' Pinot Noir was hand harvested from the Grand Cru Schlossberg, fermented 60% whole cluster and spent 24 months in oak. It's aroma shows just a touch of distant woodsmoke and subtle gamey-ness, surrounding dense red and black fruit of plums and berries and spice, with a structure composed of lovely tannins and mouth-watering acidity.
