Perhaps a once considered ugly duckling but has shown itself to be a beautiful swan, Gamay was banned by Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, from much of his territory in 1395, effectively exiling the variety to Beaujolais, where it took root amongst the farmers in the area. Easy-drinking and fruity, with just enough spice and structure, Gamay is great accompanying food or just on its own.
