Mayacamas Vineyard

Mount Veeder Chardonnay

$55.00

Over the decades, as tastes and styles in Napa Valley changed and became riper and riper through the '90's and early 2000's evolving into whatever we find being produced there today, Mayacamas has been a standard bearer for a different way of thinking.

Bob Travers and his wife Elinor bought the property, which had been producing wine since 1889, in 1968, and made a name for themselves producing such tannic and structure cabernets, that oftentimes they needed to be aged a decade or more before they were ready to be consumed, but when the wines were ready..... man they were ready—elegant and expressive, they stacked up against the best the Old World had to offer.

In 2013, the property was purchased by investor Charles Banks (of Sandhi and Wind Gap) who installed Annie Favia and Andy Erickson of Favia Wines to helm the project. Despite initial concerns that stylistically the wine would change (both Banks and Favia were Screaming Eagle alumni) it appears that is not the case, and Mayacamas remains an example of old-school Napa Valley.

Mayacamas' Chardonnay from Mount Veeder is a hand-harvested, 90% whole-cluster-pressed and wild-fermented wine that was aged in neutral and/or large cask. With an almost oyster shell minerality, candied lemon peel, lemongrass, baked apples and almonds, the wine is generous while never being bloated. It is layered and complex, with a long and lingering finish.
