Barolo

An organic Nebbiolo harvested from vineyards in the Castiglione Falletto, Bricco Ambrogio of Roddi, Saramassa crus of Barolo, along with the Cerretta site in Serralunga d’Alba. This wine was fermented in stainless steel for 4-5 days before being aged in old oak barriques for 2 years.

The Altare family bought their family's farm in the Barolo commune of La Morra in 1948. The family produced wines in the traditional Piedmontese manner, utilizing large oak botti and long fermentations, but in 1976, Elio made a trip to Burgundy, and upon his return, turned his family's estate and the entire Barolo region on its head by introducing the 225L oak barriques utilized in Burgundy. This caused a deep rift to form between Elio and his father Giovanni, who favored tradition over his son's innovation. Tragically, Giovanni passed in 1985 having never made up with his son Elio—going so far as to disinherit him—but Elio, determined to fight for his beliefs, doggedly worked until he could buy back the winery and vineyards from his siblings, and he became a flag-bearer for the Modernist Barolo movement.

As of June 2016, the ownership and supervision of the farm was officially transferred to Elio’s daughter Silvia, who continues to steadfastly and doggedly pursue her father's vision.
